How to Get Launchpad Back on the Dock on Mac

October 9, 2026

The Launchpad icon has disappeared from your Dock. Now opening an app means finding it in Finder or searching for its name. Can you bring that familiar shortcut back?

On macOS 15 or earlier, you can usually drag Launchpad back to the Dock. On macOS 26 or 27, classic Launchpad has been replaced by a different way to browse apps. You will need to use a built-in option or a Launchpad alternative such as LaunchOS.

Follow the steps that match your situation.

First, check: was the icon removed, or did you upgrade macOS?

Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of your screen and choose “About This Mac” to check your macOS version.

Your situationWhat to do
macOS 15 or earlier; only the Dock icon is missingAdd Launchpad back to the Dock
macOS 26 or 27; you want to browse apps from the DockUse the system app browser or add the Applications folder
macOS 26 or 27; you want a full-screen grid, folders, and manual sortingAdd LaunchOS to the Dock

Removing an icon from the Dock generally removes only the shortcut, without uninstalling the app. Check your system version and whether the app still exists before choosing a method. Apple’s guide to the Dock

macOS 15 or earlier: drag the original Launchpad back to the Dock

If you have not upgraded macOS and accidentally dragged Launchpad out of the Dock, add it back like this:

  1. Open Finder.
  2. Choose “Go” → “Applications” from the menu bar.
  3. Find Launchpad.
  4. Drag it to the app area of the Dock. When the Dock is at the bottom of your screen, this is usually to the left of the separator.
  5. Release it when the other icons move aside to make room.
  6. Click the new icon to check that Launchpad opens.

If Launchpad does not appear in Applications, press Shift + Command + G in Finder, enter /System/Applications, and look for Launchpad there.

You are adding a Dock shortcut; you do not need to move the app out of its original folder. Adding the icon back does not rearrange the apps inside Launchpad.

Apple’s macOS 15 guide still explains how to open Launchpad from the Dock. See the original Launchpad instructions

If you are sure you are running an older version but still cannot find Launchpad, restart your Mac and check again. The issue may involve more than a missing Dock icon, so there is no need to jump straight to resetting the entire Dock.

macOS 26 or 27: the original Launchpad entry has changed

If Launchpad disappeared after a system upgrade, dragging an icon back generally will not restore classic Launchpad.

Newer macOS versions use an app browser integrated with Spotlight. You can still browse and open apps, but it differs from the old Launchpad, where you arranged apps into pages, folders, and custom positions. Apple’s guide to the new app browser

Choose one of the following options based on the experience you want.

Option 1: add the Applications folder to the Dock

If you simply want to click one Dock icon to see your apps, try the built-in folder grid first.

  1. Open Finder and choose “Go” → “Go to Folder” from the menu bar.
  2. Enter /, press Return, and find the Applications folder.
  3. Drag that folder to the folder area of the Dock. With the Dock at the bottom of your screen, this is usually to the right of the separator, near the Trash.
  4. Release it to add the folder shortcut.
  5. Right-click the Applications folder in the Dock and choose “Grid” under “View content as.”
  6. To show a folder icon, choose “Folder” under “Display as.”

Click the shortcut to expand the app icons and open an app. Apple supports viewing Dock folders as a grid, list, or fan. See the folder display instructions

Apps and folders belong in different areas of the Dock. If the folder will not stay where you drop it, check which side of the separator you are using.

This option is free and requires no extra software. It works well for quickly browsing apps. However, it displays folder contents and does not restore classic Launchpad’s full-screen pages, drag-and-drop grouping, or your old layout.

Option 2: add LaunchOS to the Dock for a Launchpad-style experience

If you want to click a Dock icon to open a full-screen app grid and keep using folders, pages, and manual sorting, try LaunchOS.

LaunchOS supports macOS 26 and later and offers a free Basic edition for the core Launchpad-style experience. It is a standalone Mac app that provides a familiar way to browse and organize apps visually.

Install LaunchOS and add it to the Dock

  1. Download the app from the LaunchOS website.
  2. Open the downloaded installer and drag LaunchOS into Applications.
  3. Find LaunchOS in Finder’s Applications folder and drag it to the app area of the Dock.
  4. Click the LaunchOS icon in the Dock to open the app grid.
  5. Drag apps, create folders, and organize pages to suit your habits.

You can now open a Launchpad-style interface with one click from the Dock.

To keep your previous folders and app order, you can also use LaunchOS’s native Launchpad layout import feature. Whether it can import your layout depends on the old layout data still being available. Adding a Dock icon alone does not automatically restore that layout.

If you only need a Dock shortcut, the steps above are enough to get started. You can configure gestures, F4, and other shortcuts later as needed.

Frequently asked questions

Does removing Launchpad from the Dock delete my apps?

No. Removing the Dock icon only removes the shortcut. Your installed apps remain on your Mac and can be opened through Finder or Spotlight.

Why does the icon disappear when I quit the app?

An app may appear temporarily in the Dock while it is running. For apps such as LaunchOS, right-click the icon and choose “Options” → “Keep in Dock,” or drag it from Applications to the Dock to keep the shortcut there.

Do I need to reset the Dock to get Launchpad back?

Usually not if only one icon is missing. Resetting the Dock may change your pinned icons and layout. Try adding the relevant app or folder first.

Can I drag Apple’s original Launchpad back on macOS 26 or 27?

Adding a Dock icon cannot restore the classic Launchpad that has been replaced. You can use the system’s current app browser or add LaunchOS for familiar features such as a full-screen grid, folders, and pages.

Can LaunchOS completely replace Spotlight?

They suit different habits. When you know an app’s name, you can keep searching with Spotlight. When you prefer to find apps by their icons, folders, and positions, click LaunchOS in the Dock.

If that is the experience you want back, download the free LaunchOS Basic edition and put it where you are used to clicking.
